Kaempferia is a stemless plant that grows tiny tuberous roots underground to form an underground rhizome that produces a faux stem with two to four upright leaves. When the leaves are absent, the rhizome produces flowering stalks. Flowers with only three petals resemble tiny orchids or African violets.
